Faculty of Science

King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) was established in 1960 with the aims to provide education and to promote research and development in science and technology for the industrial and economic development of Thailand as well as to instill in the students a desire to serve their society and country. With royal permission, KMITL bears the royal name of King Rama IV, known as the Father of Thai Science. At present, KMITL is an autonomous institute being supervised and overseen by the Commission on Higher Education affiliated with the Ministry of Education. KMITL is regarded as one of the highest ranking and largest Universities in Science and Technology in Thailand. The institute consists of 7 faculties, 1 campus and 4 colleges.

The Faculty of Science, the second largest faculty, was originally founded in 1977 with the responsibility of providing basic science courses for the study programs offered by the Institute as well as producing highly qualified graduates and postgraduates in applied science. To benefit society and the country the Faculty places an emphasis on study programs with high standard and affordable. Students are required to carry out special projects and industrial training as part of their study programs, thereby gaining both theoretical and practical experience. Graduates of the Faculty are highly regarded, taking positions in both government institutions and in the private sectors.

The Faculty consists of 6 Departments and 1 Center:

  1. Department of Mathematics

    The Department offers courses in Applied Mathematics such as mathematical analysis, mathematics as teaching tools, computer program for mathematical problem, etc. The programs emphasize the application of mathematics in industry and business.

  2. Department of Computer Science

    The Department offers courses in Computer Science such as programming system analysis, computer package design, software engineering, computer graphics, etc. The programs emphasize the application of computer science in industry, business, agriculture and engineering.

  3. Department of Chemistry

    The Department provides courses in the following fields: Industrial Chemistry, Material Science, Petrochemistry, Polymer Technology and Environmental Chemistry. The Department aims to produce skilled and well-qualified chemists to meet the country’s needs. The teaching and research activities cover many topics in industrial application and environmental awareness.

  4. Department of Biology

    The Department aims to produce versatile graduates in Biotechnology and Industrial Microbiology. The programs emphasize the utilization of organisms in industry and agriculture. Various products and wastes from industry and agriculture can be turned into useful products by biological processes. Graduates from the Department are well equipped to work in various industries.

  5. Department of Physics

    The Department offers courses in Applied Physics specializing in solid-state electronics, optic fiber and alternative energy. The objectives of the curriculum are to provide opportunity for attainment of professional competence. The Department has also established research laboratories to foster the skill and expertise of physicists in various fields.

  6. Department of Statistics

    The Department offers study programs relevant to both theoretical and practical aspects of statistics. Graduates from the Department have solid skills to apply the statistics in various fields of work, for example, research, industry, business, society, education, agriculture, engineering and health science.

  7. Scientific Instrument Center (SIC)

    Scientific Instrument Center (SIC) provides scientific instruments and equipment to support learning, teaching and research. In addition, the Center also offers services in analyzing samples, identifying microorganisms for research work, industry or any other purposes. Examples of scientific instruments at the Center include HPLC, AAS, XRD, XRF, GCMS, TGA, PCR, etc.


Admissions can be processed through the national university central admission, direct admission or quota admission.

Academic Calendar

The regular academic year consists of two semesters. The first semester begins in August and ends in November. The second semester begins in January and ends in April. Opportunities for intensive study are available during summer sessions which commence in and conclude in May each year.


KMITL has funds available to give some support to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students who are in need.


To support studying and teaching activities as well as research and development and to improve students’ quality of life, KMITL provides academic service and facilities such as modern laboratories, computer center, central library, dormitory, health-care service center, sports complex, canteen, post office, banks, convenience stores and so on.

Academic Collaboration

Realizing the importance of the academic cooperation with other centers of excellence, the Faculty has developed closed partnerships with various institutions or organizations both national and international levels in the areas of faculty and student exchange, joint degree programs, joint research projects, joint training programs, joint workshops, seminars or conferences. At present the Faculty has active partnerships with the following foreign universities and institutions:

  • - Harbin Institute of Technology, P.R. China
  • - Tokai University, Japan
  • - University of Strathclyde, Scotland, UK.
  • - TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany


The Faculty of Science, KMITL is located in the eastern region of Bangkok. It is near the Suvarnabhumi International Airport. It may be conveniently reached by rail from the Bangkok Central Railway Station which has service every hour to KMITL. Travel can be made by road through Bangkok-Chonburi Motorway which runs pass the Institute. There are also regular bus services and special bus services between the Institute and central Bangkok.
